    10 Magical Air Cleaning Plants

Home |Bookmark This Tip |Print This Tip |Link to this Tip |Enlarge text |Shrink text

Plants are not just decorative, they can also clean and purify the air in our homes, and act as anti-pollutants. Houseplants can reduce components of indoor air pollution, even volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene. Plants also reduce airborne microbes and increase humidity.

Some indoor plants are more effective than others, so this article is dedicated to these magical house-cleaning air purifiers for your home and/or work place. Also included are illustrations of each of the miracle plants, as well as basic plant care.

Researchers from NASA and other organizations recommend at least 15-18 good-sized plants for a house or apartment of 1800 square feet or 167 square meters.

    Peace Lily

    1. Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

Spathiphyllum, also called Peace Lily, acts as a general air cleanser of many environmental pollutants, and will even filter contaminants such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. It cleans best at one plant per 10m2.

Plant care: Easy. The plant will even survive being neglected at times. No direct sunlight to avoid burns. It can also handle a shadier spot. Watering approximately once per week, only when the soil is dry. Too much water, too much heating and too much light can all harm the Peace Lily.

    Spider plant

    2. Chlorophytum comosum (Spider Plant)

Spider plant is a popular and commonly used house plant. It grows from a central rosette and produces new shoots, branched stolons with small white flowers, as well as baby plantlets.

Plant care: Very easy, thrives under nearly any conditions. The plant will even survive being neglected at times.

    3. Epipremnum aureum (Devil's Ivy)

    Devil's Ivy

Epipremnum aureum, also called Devils Ivy, or Golden Pathos, is an excellent air cleansing plant. It is however toxic when consumed, for example by pets, so care should be taken in order to avoid this. Its decorative marbled leaves and easy maintenance make it very popular amongst indoor plants.

Plant care: Golden Pathos is a hardy plant which requires very little care. Should be watered only when the soil feels dry. No direct sunlight. It can stand bright light, but the best results are achieved with a medium indirect light.

    Arrowhead plant

    4. Syngonium podophyllum (Arrowhead plant)

Syngonium podophyllum , also called Arrowhead plant, or American evergreen, is the most commonly cultivated species of the Syngonium genus. The plant, when eaten, is poisonous, so don't eat it..

Plant care: No direct sunlight, allow to dry in between waterings. Daily misting during the dry winter months, or maintain higher humidity levels in other ways.

    English Ivy

    5. Hedera helix (English Ivy)

This robust plant is the ideal companion for pet owners, as it efficiently filters formaldehyde aerosols and fecal particles from the air. There are many different species of the English Ivy, differing by color, shape, and size. The plant is also poisonous.

Plant care: Partial shade to bright light, but no direct sunlight. Robust plant which grows so well and easily that is considered a weed in some countries.

    Heartleaf philodendron

    6. Philodendrons

The two most efficient kinds of philadendron are the Heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron scandens `oxycardium') and the Elephant Ear Philodendron (Philodendron domesticum). Philadendrons are excellent at removing formaldehyde, especially so at higher concentrations. It should also be noted that philadendrons are poisonous.

Plant care: Philodendrons prefer a partial shade and a well drained soil.

    Gerbera Daisy

    7. Gerbera Jamesonii (Gerbera Daisy)

The Gerbera is a well known decorative plant or cut flower, but its air filtering properties are less known. It is most suitable for removing benzene (which is a well known carcinogen) and trichloroethylene from the air.

Plant care: It prefers bright light and a well drained soil. Gerbera blooms repeatedly, from mid-spring until fall.

    Weeping Fig

    8. Ficus benjamina (Weeping Fig)

In its natural habitat the small fruit of the Weeping Fig is the food of choice for many birds. In any indoor scenario, the Ficus benjamina will effectively filter indoor air toxins.

Plant care: The ficus can handle a partial shade, but also really likes bright sunlight. The soil should be well drained. Moderate watering. The plant can be sensitive to changing conditions, so it doesn't much like being moved.

    Dracaena marginata

    9. Dracaena marginata (Red-edged dracaena)

The Dracaena marginata removes not only benzene and formaldehyde from the air, but also xylene and toluene Other air filtering Dracaenas include Warneck dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Warneckii'), Janet Craig dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Janet Craig'), Cornstalk dracaena (Dracaena fragans 'Massangeana')

Plant care: It really likes bright light, but under no circumstances direct sunlight. Better a little too little light than a little too much. It is similar with water. Too much water can make its root decay. It will tolerate irregular watering rhythms and dry soil much better than too much water.

    Chrysanthemum

    10. Chrysanthemum (Pot Mum)

Well known as a decorative flower, the Chrysanthemum is an amazing plant, which has not only medicinal purposes but is also very good at filtering a variety of polluting compounds from the air.

Plant care: Not as easy as most of the other mentioned air purifiers. It likes a bright, but indirect sunlight. Watering with warm (not too cold) water. Allow the soil to dry in between waterings. Fertilizing is needed before the blooming period. Faded blooms should be removed to prolong flowering. Good air circulation is important.

Other air cleaning plants include Christmas cactus, Sansevieria Laurentii (Mother-in-Law's Tongue), Philodendron selloum (selloum philodendron), Aglaonema modestum (Chinese evergreen), Chamaedorea sefritzii (bamboo or reed palm), Sansevieria trifasciata (snake plant), Saintpaulia (African Violets) and Aloe barbabensis (Aloe Vera).

    Comments By Karin:

Just be sure to pick up leaves as they fall and replant plants with new soil every 2 years. I had a plant that I recieved when my son was born- then 22 years before. I never removed leaves and just let them rot in the pot when they fell. I figured it was natural mulch. The soil turned into a fungus and bacteria factory and instead of cleaning the air, it was poisoning our bathroom where it grew. I began having allergic and asthma like symtoms. When we had our air in the bathroom tested, it turned out we had 200 times the exceptable of plant fungus in the air.

Needless to say I threw it out. Now I keep air cleaning plants and breathing got better.

Five easy ways to detox lymph nodes and boost your immune system

(NaturalNews) Everyone knows a sedentary life style, whether as a couch potato, office worker or vehicle operator, is not conducive to good health. If one is ambitious, with enough time he or she will exercise andfocus on the heart, lungs, and/or muscles.

The lymph system needs to be worked also. It is the sewage system for cellular metabolic toxins. Lymph nodes provide antigens for purifying fluids containing anything from allergens to cancer cells. That fluid is called lymph. There is more lymph in your body than blood, but there is no pump for lymph.

If lymph doesn't move out of small lymph nodes through their ducts into the kidneys and liver, it backs up like a clogged sewer line. Lymph nodes can become infected and you wind up with "swollen glands," a misnomer. Lymph nodes are not glands.

Anyone who eats and drinks processed food and sodas or alcohol while leading a sedentary lifestyle is stuck with a compromised immune system from lymph that needs to be drained.

    Moving your lymph

Surprisingly, in this era of hyper-exercising, many health experts are realizing the importance of walking to move that lymph around. This is not leisurely strolling, but brisk walking. Walking should be done outdoors in as natural a setting as possible with trees, grass, and open fresh air.

The walk should take 20 minutes or more. Four times a week is good enough. Start out as briskly as you can, then move into power walking if possible. Since there are so many lymph nodes in the upper body, armpits, neck and shoulders, arm movement should be more extreme than usual.

This is especially important for women who wear bras and use underarm deodorants containing toxins. Those toxins leech into abundant lymph node areas nearby and just beneath the skin.

Another aspect of walking is that it is a weight bearing activity. Gravity helps move lymph each time one steps briskly with a slight bound to the ground. The sudden stops of each step with your full weight create additional gravitational pulls, which helps pull the lymph downward.

That's why rebounding works very well for moving lymph. A rebounder can be purchased for as little as $25 US dollars. A rebounder is like a mini-trampoline, around four feet in diameter. It's close to the ground, so all you do is step up and bounce up and down for 10 to 15 minutes, indoors or outdoors.

Each time you bounce you increase the gravitational pull on your lymph. You're getting low level "Gs"or increased gravitational pulls similar to what you feel from sudden changes of vehicular speed or carnival rides. With intense walking or rebounding, the "G's" are in vertical alignment with your body and its lymph system.

Massage that focuses on the upper shoulders, arms, and neck is useful as well. There are massage techniques that focus on lymph drainage. Polarity therapy has specific techniques for moving lymph also.

Dry brushing vigorously on the arms, torso, and legs is also recommended for moving lymph. The brush stroke directions should go from neck and calves to torso.

    Herbs to help purify lymph

Herbs and teas can be used to purify the lymph. Cleavers herb is used in many lymph formulas. It can be purchased as an extract or tincture, or as loose herbs to make teas or tinctures. Indigo is another herb suited for detoxifying the lymph system. Some recommend goldenseal and Echinacea as well.

Drinking plenty of pure water is essential with all these recommendations.

Easy homemade remedies relieve arthritis and joint pain

(NaturalNews) Homemade remedies for arthritis, gout and other joint pain are never farther away than the kitchen cupboard or the refrigerator. Joint disease is the result of various causes ranging from aging, to over-use and autoimmune diseases that attack joints and surrounding tissue. Pharmaceutical companies have designer drugs that reduce inflammation to help relieve pain and often cause significant side effects. The ingredients for homemade remedies can be purchased at grocery and health food stores and many may already be stocked in your pantry, offering significant savings over costly pharmaceutical drugs.

    Anti-Inflammatory triad

On their own, turmeric, ginger and bromelain work as effective anti-inflammatory agents. Each works to relieve pain, stiffness and swelling. In combination, they provide a powerhouse of natural medicine. The three substances are synergistic to one another, each boosting the other's effectiveness and complimenting each other's medicinal action. Research has shown that turmeric works as well as any anti-inflammatory drug to reduce pain in the joints. Ginger has been used for centuries to treat various ailments from nausea to joint pain. Bromelain is an enzyme derived from pineapples that possesses potent healing pproperties, relieving sufferers from inflamed muscle, tendon and soft tissue pain. Take these in combination on an empty stomach twice a day for pain relief. All three substances can thin the blood, so those taking blood thinning medicine should first check with their health practitioners.

    Stinging nettles

Homemade remedies from stinging nettles are numerous. A traditional herbal treatment, stinging nettles are used to relieve symptoms of joint pain, arthritis and gout. A tea can be made from the dried herb or the fresh leaves. Use caution and wear gloves if harvesting fresh nettles. As their name implies, the little hairs on the plant can cause serious skin reactions including hives and other painful outbreaks. These are neutralized when heated into tea or when the plant is dried. The tea can be consumed hot or cold or used as a topical soak for painful joints.

    Cayenne pepper

Found in most spice cupboards and known for its spicy-hot taste, cayenne makes an excellent topical ointment that relieves joint pain. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in cayenne pepper, tricks the brain by causing local irritation to skin where signals then travel along nerve pathways, distracting the brain from the true source of pain. In time, repeated topical applications of cayenne pepper will reduce arthritis pain significantly. To make topical homemade remedies, mix 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper with 1/2 cup of cocoa butter, lanolin or coconut oil. Apply it directly to the sore joint. Alternatively, mix 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and add to a foot bath with warm water. Soak hands or feet for 20 minutes, then rinse. Cayenne pepper can cause skin irritation.

    Pectin Grape Juice

Homemade remedies made from fruit pectin and grape juice can relieve joint pain, and reduce swelling and stiffness. Pectin is found in the cells of many plants and acts as a thickener in preparations such as jellies. Grape juice is loaded with antioxidants, among them, anthocyanins, noted for its effect on reducing inflammation. Pectin regulates the flow of fluids in plant cells and is believed to act to relieve fluid buildup in the joints of arthritis sufferers. The best pectin is found at the health food stores and is free of MSG and other additives. Mix 1/2 cup of juice with 2 tablespoons pectin. Add water if needed and drink twice daily for 6 weeks. Reduce the frequency as symptoms disappear.

World renowned heart surgeon renounces mainstream heart health practice

(NaturalNews) It is very encouraging to see a mainstream medicine insider with impressive credentials come out and confirm what some of us outsiders have known for a while.

Dr. Dwight Lundell has been a heart specialist MD and surgeon for 25 years, having performed 5,000 open heart surgeries. He was Chief Surgeon at the Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, AZ, and he ran a successful private practice.

This is how he begins his personal testimony: "We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong."

Dr. Landell's current perspective on heart health

Dr. Lundell has seen through the cholesterol hoax, the low fat diet scam recommended by medical authorities, and the high adverse risks without benefits of statin drugs. From his experience as a heart specialist, he realizes that statin drugs are more dangerous than high cholesterol (http://www.naturalnews.com).

He maintains that lowering cholesterol unnaturally invites other health issues. Our bodies need cholesterol for cell walls, nervous system sheathing, and brain matter. Cholesterol is part of our necessary physiology. Cholesterol is also converted into various hormones by the endocrine system.

Dr. Landell points to low fat diet recommendations as a major factor for raising cardiac and diabetes issues statistics nationally. He points out that healthy fats do exist and they're important. Medical dietary recommendations have expanded an already toxic food industry by promoting unhealthy fats (http://www.naturalnews.com/035033_cholesterol_disinformation_fats.html).

Dr. Landell has seen evidence of inflammation within blood vessel inner walls while performing his many heart surgeries. Inflammation, he asserts, is the cause of heart disease and other chronic health issues. This has been explored by a few other MDs and naturopaths over the past few years.

So now that he's out of the Medical Mafia Matrix, Dr. Lundell is promoting nutrition with whole foods and healthy fats. He has written a book, The Cure for Heart Disease: Truth Will Save a Nation, and has founded the Healthy Humans Foundation.

He warns that toxic processed oils are pervasive, saturating processed foods and market shelves. This contributes to an omega-6 to omega-3 imbalance for most of the population. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio should be 3 to 1, or inflammation will definitely occur sooner or later. Among Americans, this ratio is sometimes as high as 35 to 1.

Kudos to Dr. Landell for stepping out of the Medical Mafia Matrix to realize the value of nutrition for heart health and debunk several decades of AMA and Big Pharma cholesterol myth-making that slandered healthy fats.

Dr. Landell is one of the more prominent mainstream medicine members stepping out to slowly unravel the false paradigm for heart health, which even many alternative health practitioners have fallen for.

If you know someone who is being treated without for cardiac problems without real progress and is reluctant to take advice from anyone that doesn't have MD after his or her name, send that person to Dr. Landell's website (http://truthaboutheartdisease.org/).

How sniffing rosemary could boost your brain power

    By Julian Gavaghan

Last updated at 9:01 AM on 28th February 2012

Sniffing rosemary could boost your brain power, scientists have suggested.

Tests show that cognitive performance improves when a compound in the herb’s oil – 1, 8-cineole – is absorbed into blood.

Biochemists at the University of Northumbria now want to see how the ingredient might affect our brains.

Pick-me-up: Tests showed those who smelled rosemary performed better in cognitive examinations

Pick-me-up: Tests showed those who smelled rosemary performed better in cognitive examinations

Rosemary has a long history as a traditional remedy with such widespread uses as a hair rinse and a cat repellent.

It has long been thought to boost brain power, so scientists were not totally surprised that respondents performed better in tests.

However, they were shocked when they realised the rosemary oil has an effect on the blood, it was reported in the Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology journal.

Dr Mark Moss said: ‘We were not surprised by the improvement in cognitive performance following exposure to rosemary aroma as this has been demonstrated previously.

‘What excited us was the demonstration that performance was linked to plasma levels of 1,8-cineole following exposure.’

Tests on 20 people showed the natural compound was absorbed through the nose and into the blood plasma.

For Dr Moss, this means there is a more traditional biochemical explanation for the increased cognitive performances previously demonstrated.

‘This compound is present in rosemary but has not previously been demonstrated to be absorbed into blood plasma in humans,’ he added.

‘It is our view that the aroma therefore acts like a therapeutic drug, rather than any effects being a result of the more sensory properties of the aroma.’

Moss reminds that it’s easy to forget how many of our therapeutic drugs are the result of plant science.

His team will continue to investigate the therapeutic benefits of several common plants, including peppermint and lavender.

Benefits: Scientists are seeing what effects other herbs have on our health

Benefits: Scientists are seeing what effects other herbs have on our health

An upcoming study with rosemary will aim to determine whether 1,8-cineole, when ingested orally, can survive the rigors of the gastrointestinal system to be similarly absorbed into the bloodstream.

The potential benefits of the research are wide-ranging.

‘Plants are very complex organisms and contain many different active compounds and these vary in concentration from plant to plant and even within the same plant over the course of a day,’ Dr Moss told msnbc.com.

‘The accumulation of knowledge regarding possible impacts of plant aromas and extracts could potentially lead to an identification of the best combination to promote specific effects.’

‘At its grandest conclusion might be the development of plant-based drugs that might extend mental capacity into old age through pharmacological challenge to decline,’ Moss concludes.

Unvaccinated people a public health threat? Nope, people who take antibiotics are the real danger

    Tuesday, March 06, 2012
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com (See all articles...)

    628Share
(NaturalNews) Vaccine pushers often resort to an interesting fear tactic to try to mandate vaccine obedience among the masses: They insist that those who are unvaccinated are a health threat to the rest of the vaccinated population because the vaccinated people might get infected by the unvaccinated disease carriers!

The quack logic of such a claim should be self-evident. If vaccines protect people from infectious disease, then vaccinated people should not be concerned at all about being around unvaccinated people. After all, the vaccine made them all "immune," right?

But of course that's all propaganda. Vaccines don't really work at all. They are marketed under a blanket of disease hysteria and pimped by a cult following of medicalized quacks and needle junkies who abandoned real science long ago. After all, who needs real science when you've got the CDC marketing all the fear for you? The CDC is to medicine what George Bush was to the war industry -- spread a little fear and the profits roll in.

The real risk to others? People who routinely take antibiotics

As it turns out, the real health risk that does exist in person-to-person exposure of infectious disease comes from people who routinely take antibiotics. Those who take the most antibiotics become drug-resistant bacteria factories, and they can spread their drug-resistant strains to others around them. Their risk of developing superbugs rises proportionally to the frequency and duration of their taking prescription antibiotics. (http://www.naturalnews.com/028479_superbugs_antibiotics.html)

The most dangerous person in your family, it turns out, is not the "unvaccinated" person but the one taking antibiotics! They are human breeding grounds for bacterial mutations that can be downright deadly.

Why hospitals are so dangerous to your health

That's why informed people know the hospital is the most dangerous place you can go, other than working in a homemade meth lab of course. Hospitals are where superbugs pass easily from patient to doctor, and then from doctor to another patient. Hospital superbugs are spread by the medical staff, mostly because they routinely fail to wash their hands before touching patients.

As NaturalNews reported in January, 2010, a whopping 247 people die every day in U.S. hospitals from medical staff failing to wash their hands. (http://www.naturalnews.com/027981_doctors_hand_washing.html)

This is like a jumbo jet falling out of the sky and killing everyone on board every single day. It's like a 9/11 terrorist attacking happening every two weeks. This is one of the most alarming (and preventable) causes of death in America today and virtually no one even talks about it.

Doctors, of course, strongly contribute to the development of superbugs by handing out antibiotics as if they were Halloween candy. Someone shows up at the office with a sniffle, and the busy doctor scribbles out a prescription for some fashionable new antibiotic that earns him perks from the young drug rep whose PC database tracks every name-brand prescription he writes. The patient, meanwhile, spends a pocket fortune on a useless drug that's actually quite dangerous. Not only does it increase that patient's chances of developing a mutant strain of drug-resistant bacteria; it also flushes antibiotics down the drain and contaminates the environment downstream.

So if you're walking around in public suspiciously glancing around to see who might be sniffling or sneezing, clear your head and think about reality for a second. The CDC wants you to stupidly believe all the unvaccinated people are a threat to your health, when in reality people who consciously refuse vaccines tend to be far healthier and get sick far less often than the hypochondriac dweebs who rush out to get vaccinated every few months.

Doctors and drugs are the greatest threat to your health - far greater than terrorism

The real people who are a threat to your health are not just the pill-popping antibiotics consumers, but also:

    • The psyched-out grandma on psychotropic drugs barreling down the road behind the wheel of a 1978 Buick. (Driving While Medicated...)

    • The teen schoolboy who was diagnosed with depression and put on SSRI drugs that make him feel violently suicidal.

    • The pediatrician who wants to inject your child with chemotherapy to "prevent" cancer and insist he's going to call CPS if you don't let him poison your child.

    • The drug addict pharmacist who, in between incorrectly filling your prescription with random deadly chemicals, snorts up his own private concoction of controlled substances in the back room.

    • The oncologist who misdiagnosed you with breast cancer but wants to poison you with five rounds of chemotherapy "just to be sure." (Oh yeah, I bet he never told you that he PROFITS from selling you the chemotherapy drugs that poison you...)

    • The school bus driver with a heart condition who takes an extra dose of deadly statin drugs and suffers a fatal heart muscle breakdown while behind the wheel of a bus carrying 58 schoolchildren toward a railroad crossing.

These are the real threats to your safety... not a bunch of healthy people who deliberately refuse to be injected with hazardous vaccines.

But of course the medical establishment doesn't want you to be aware of any risks associated with using their products. All their drugs are perfectly safe! Perfectly effective! Perfectly priced! Perfectly profitable! There's nothing wrong with them, by God, or the FDA would never have approved them, would they?

    oil

Toxic rapeseed and other low-grade oils with additives are being passed off as olive oil

Friday, March 02, 2012 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer

    1094Share
(NaturalNews) As much as 50 percent of the olive oil sold in the U.S. is not actually pure olive oil, as some brands claiming to be "extra-virgin" or "100 percent Italian," for instance, have actually been adulterated with toxic rapeseed oil, more popularly known as canola oil, soybean oil, and other low-grade oils. In his new book Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, olive oil expert Tom Mueller explains that not all olive oil is the same, and offers advice on how to spot authentic olive oil amidst all the imposters.

During a recent interview with Terry Gross from NPR's Fresh Air, Mueller explains how olive oil adulteration is much more widespread than people think, if they are even aware of it at all. For olive oil to truly be considered "extra-virgin," it has to come from fresh, crushed olives, and not be refined in any way or contain any chemical solvents. It also has to pass certain tests of integrity in order to be considered legitimate, for which many of the brands popularly sold today would fail.

"The legal definition simply says it has to pass certain chemical tests, and in a sensory way it has to taste and smell vaguely of fresh olives, because it's a fruit, and have no faults," said Mueller. "But many of the extra-virgin olive oils on our shelves today in America don't clear [the legal definition]."

Beige olive oil in plastic bottles is most likely adulterated

Real extra-virgin olive oil should have a vibrant, almost peppery flavor, for instance, and not taste bland or watered down. It is also typically stored in dark, glass bottles so that its array of health-promoting antioxidants, its taste, and its forceful green color -- yes, olive oil should be green, not yellowish in color -- are not harmed by light or damaging UV rays from the sun. For this reason, avoiding olive oil in clear, plastic bottles is recommended.

"What [real olive oil] gets you from a health perspective is a cocktail of 200-plus highly beneficial ingredients that explain why olive oil has been the heart of the Mediterranean diet," added Mueller during his interview with NPR. "Bad olives have free radicals and impurities, and then you've lost that wonderful cocktail ... that you get from fresh fruit, from real extra-virgin olive oil."

Most imported extra-virgin olive oil appears questionable in authenticity

The University of California, Davis published a report on olive oil back in 2010 entitled Tests indicate that imported 'extra virgin' olive oil often fails international and USDA standards. In this report, researchers found that 69 percent of imported and ten percent of California-based oils labeled as olive oil did not pass International Olive Council (IOC) and US Department of Agriculture sensory standards for extra virgin olive oil.

Of those brands tested, the following failed to meet extra-virgin olive oil standards:

    • Bertolli
    • Carapelli
    • Filippo Berio
    • Mazzola
    • Mezzetta
    • Newman's Own
    • Pompeian
    • Rachel Ray
    • Safeway
    • Star
    • Whole Foods

The following brands were found to meet extra-virgin olive oil standards as part of the study:

    • Corto Olive
    • California Olive Ranch
    • Kirkland Organic
    • Lucero (Ascolano)
    • McEvoy Ranch Organic

    aspartame

Aspartame withdrawal and side effects explained - Here's how to protect yourself

Friday, March 02, 2012 by: Aurora Geib

    2982Share
(NaturalNews) If you have been drinking diet soda and chewing gum, chances are you have been enjoying aspartame in generous quantities. Aspartame is a popular sugar substitute that can be found in diet soda drinks, chewing gum, fruit spreads and sugar-free products to name a few. It is also known by the brand names, Sweet One, NutraSweet and Spoonful. Despite its popularity in the market, what many do not know is that aspartame accounts for 75 percent of side effect complaints received by the Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS) of the US Food and Drug Administration.

    Can aspartame be addictive?

Yes, according to Dr. Betty Martini, popular anti-aspartame advocate. She explains that it is an "addictive, exitoneurotic, carcinogenic, genetically engineered drug and adjuvant that damages the mitochondria." Moreover, Dr. Janet Hall, another famous advocate against aspartame, shares on her website that all artificial sweeteners create an artificial need for more sweetness. She goes on to add that forced sweetness, being a class of altered food, is a trap that cause people to become addicted to sweeter tasting food with no nutritional value.

Recent studies have shown that aspartame is addictive because it affects the absorption of dopamine in the brain.

    Side Effects of Aspartame

Aspartame is made up of 3 components: phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. Understanding the effects of aspartame will require us to look into its genetic make up.

In its website, manufacturers of aspartame continue to assure the public that low-calorie sweeteners are effective for weight reduction, weight maintenance, reduction of tooth decay, management of diabetes and reduction of risks associated with obesity. They claim that consumers of low-calorie, sugar-free beverages were able to incorporate these products into a healthy lifestyle not because they need to manage their weight (since a majority of people use low-calorie foods and beverages for reasons other than dieting) but because use of low-calorie products is part of a healthy lifestyle.

Despite the benefits cited in the aspartame website, independent studies have been shown that aspartame is not as safe as it appears to be. In a recent study conducted by researchers from the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine and at Columbia University Medical Center, it was discovered that those who drank diet soft drinks on a daily basis were more likely to contract vascular diseases compared to those who took none.

Supporters of aspartame insist that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are found in many foods. What they have conveniently left out, however, is that the said neurotoxins are harmless only when consumed with other nutrients like fats, amino acids (protein) and carbohydrates. On their own, they are absorbed by the nervous system in large concentrations causing the stimulation of brain neurons and cell death. Symptoms of the conditions include headaches, confusion, balance problems and seizures.

Methanol, on the other hand, is also a highly toxic substance. It is released in the small intestine gradually with the assistance of chymotrypsin and then broken down into formaldehyde: a chemical used for embalming which is a carcinogen that causes birth defects, retinal damage and DNA replication.

Again, supporters of aspartame insist that methanol is safe because it is found in vegetables and fruit juices. What they neglect to mention, however, is that methanol in vegetables and fruit juices is bound with pectin and the body does not possess the digestive enzyme to break down pectin and release ethanol into the body. Furthermore, ethanol, the methanol toxicity antidote, is found in natural sources of methanol, inhibiting the metabolism of methanol and giving the body sufficient time, through the lungs and kidneys, to clear it. Methanol found in aspartame is easily absorbed because it is in a free form.

Aspartic acid, methanol and phenylalanine and their breakdown in the body are cumulative because of their fast absorption and slow excretion.

In 1984, studies conducted revealed that the toxicity of NutraSweet (aspartame) to living organisms. The State of Arizona arrived at findings which showed that aspartame in carbonated drinks can break down into free methanol in temperatures of 99 degrees Fahrenheit. On May 13, 1998, the University of Barcelona also arrived at results revealing that aspartame was transformed into formaldehyde in the bodies of living creatures, and on later examination formaldehyde had spread through the vital parts of the body.

    "Artificial sweetener disease"

The US Food and Drug Administration has received reports of 92 medical health problems resulting from aspartame, ranging from abdominal pain to migraines, dizziness and hives. Aspartame poisoning is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms mock other syndromes. It changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, lowering or blocking levels of hormones like dopamine and tyrosine that are necessary for bodily function.

Since aspartame cannot be detected through lab tests and x-rays, these diseases and disorders may actually be a toxic load. Below are some specific health conditions that are associated with aspartame you might want to recall next time you open a can of diet soda:

    1. Cancer - The Ramazzine Foundation, a European Cancer Research Center, conducted a study on aspartame which revealed that aspartame increases the risk of cancers (lymphoma, leukemia and breast cancers). Despite the National Cancer Institute's stand that no such connection was ever firmly established between aspartame and cancer, it might well be worth thinking that what is harmful to rats is also harmful to humans. Moreover, the dismissive stand of regulatory bodies concerning aspartame is merely based on the absence of data that can conclusively support such a connection and NOT on a finding that establishes that aspartame does not cause cancer.

    2. Mental disorders and degeneration of brain cells - Excessive ingestion of artificial sweeteners, according to researchers from the University of Praetoria and the University of Limpopo, may lead to various mental disorders and the degeneration of the brain. Publishing in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers noted that aspartame appeared to cause excessive signals, damage and even death to nerve cells. Since aspartame disrupts the functioning of the cell's energy source, it will lead to a cascade of effects on the whole system.

    3. Headaches - As early as 1994, a study conducted published on PubMed.gov showed that ingestion of aspartame was associated with headaches. Subjects in the study revealed that they experienced headaches 33 percent of the time when taking aspartame compared to 24 percent when on placebo treatment. Moreover, Dr. Robert Milne and Blake More in their book "Headaches" report that headaches are the most reported side effect given by those who take products containing aspartame. They add that in a University of Parkinson's at Florida study, it was found out that the incidences of migraines doubled for a majority of test subjects who took aspartame. Their headaches lasted longer and were marked by significant signs of shakiness and diminished vision.

    4. Weight gain and increased blood sugar - Aspartame is not a healthy alternative for diabetics or those wanting to lose weight. Contrary to popular belief, a recent study has shown that regular consumption of diet soft drinks is strongly connected with abdominal obesity and that aspartame can increase blood sugar. Researchers from the University of Texas Health Center San Antonio reported in a study that, as a group, 70 percent of those who drank diet soft drinks gained weight as opposed to those who did not. Moreover, those who drank 2 or more diet sodas regularly experienced an increase in their waist circumference by 500 percent more than those who did not drink them.

In another related study that analyzed a possible relationship between intake of aspartame and fasting glucose and insulin levels among 40 diabetes-prone mice, one of the researchers in the study, Dr. Gabriel Fernandes, revealed that heavy aspartame exposure might potentially contribute to the associations noticed between soda consumption and the risk of diabetes in humans.

The above health conditions are just some of the 92 reported medical health problems reportedly associated with aspartame. Despite the stand of aspartame manufacturers that their product has been declared safe for human consumption, it is still strange that there are still reports from sectors who do not stand to benefit from such declarations that aspartame is not safe. Prudence would dictate that avoiding a product may be better in the long run than to discover firsthand that all that was said about it was true. Why? Because you happen to be living proof of it.

    How to protect yourself

To keep yourself safe from contracting "artificial sweetener syndrome," it is suggested that you stop taking all products containing this chemical.

If you have brought or stocked up on products containing aspartame, you can arrange to return the products so you can get a refund of your money. If you feel that you may need professional help in getting over the disease, please see your doctor as soon as possible. Take a proactive approach to being healthy.

Finally, for those taking aspartame simply because they want to observe a healthy diet, replace your aspartame habit with real sugar. Although it may have more calories, it offers a far better solution than being poisoned. Those who want to manage their weight problems are advised to seek a healthier course of action like eating more whole foods, vegetables and fruits and getting regular exercise. True and sustainable weight loss cannot be achieved through a quick fix without a change in lifestyle. Set a personal example to be healthy and watch yourself regain your life.

    gluten

The top 5 foods to avoid if you have gluten intolerance and wheat allergies

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by: JB Bardot

(NaturalNews) Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, semolina, kamut, barley, spelt, triticale, bulgur and rye and forms an elastic-type protein that helps bind molecules, causing flours to rise during baking. Its presence in certain flours contributes to a delicious, chewy bagel or bread dough; however, it is also an allergen for many people. Reactions to eating gluten may appear immediately or hours and days later. Gluten intolerance can cause serious autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, celiac and Crohn's disease as well as a multitude of other symptoms ranging from irritable bowl syndrome to skin rashes and headaches. Most problems can be prevented by avoiding those foods and adhering to a gluten-free diet.

The idea of giving up wheat -- the most commonly used flour for almost all commercial baked goods, pastas and cereals -- may be challenging and feel overwhelming at first. However, there are many new gluten-free products available and bakeries are producing more and more gluten-free recipes due to the high demand.

    1. Grains

Certain grains should be avoided to prevent reactions to gluten, according to guidelines provided by Rush University Medical Center. All foods containing the grains mentioned above including but not limited to bread, pasta, cereals, muffins, bagels, cookies, cakes, gravies, croutons, bread crumbs, biscuits, rolls, pita, batter-fried foods, noodles, wheat-based tortillas, ice cream cones, bran, wheat germ, dumplings, pancake mixes, pies, pumpernickel and rye breads, cornbread, vermicelli, doughnuts, buns, pretzels, spaghetti, waffles and pastries, should be avoided unless the label states clearly that they are gluten-free. Many of these foods can be substituted with similar gluten-free products available in most health food and grocery stores.

    2. Condiments and Seasonings

Many common condiments and seasonings contain gluten and cause problems for those who are gluten-intolerant. The following foods should be eliminated from the diet unless they plainly state on the label that they are gluten-free: Worcestershire sauce, MSG, modified food starch, malt products, bouillon, barley malt, soy sauce and any salad dressings or gravies thickened with wheat or other gluten-based flour.

    3. Alcoholic Beverages

Eliminate certain alcoholic drinks like beer, ale, light beer and hard liquors made with grains containing gluten. For anyone newly diagnosed with gluten intolerance,it's recommended that youproceed cautiously to determine if you can tolerate alcoholic drinks distilled from gluten grains, which include most gin, whiskey and some vodkas.

    4. Processed Meats

The Celiac Sprue Association recommends eliminating all processed meats from the diet. Sprue is one form of debilitating arthritis accompanied by a wealth of digestive symptoms and is caused by eating gluten. Along with having cancer-causing chemicals in them, almost all processed meats including cold cuts, liverwurst, hot dogs, sausages, bologna, pepperoni, salami and pate are high in gluten because various grains are used in their manufacture.

    5. Sweets and Treats

Being on a gluten-free diet includes eliminating sweets and treats that may be made with flours and other substances containing gluten. Foods to avoid include all products made with malt, all chocolate and chocolate candy containing malt, ice cream, candies containing cereal extract, sherbets, commercial cake frosting, and root beer. Check labels and look for products that are specifically labeled gluten-free.

    Cross Contamination

According to the Mayo Clinic, when a variety of gluten-free products come into contact with products such as grains containing gluten, cross-contamination may occur. This is common in factories that process both regular and gluten-free products and use the same machines for both. The other place cross-contamination can occur is in the kitchen. It occurs most commonly when preparing meals and sharing the same kitchen tools and surfaces. Use extreme care and have a back up cutting board that is only used for preparing gluten-free items to avoid cross-contamination.
